The origins of Sovana date back to the Etruscans. You can see some of their work in the nearby Vie Cave (long paths dug into the tufa rock) and the Necropolis that is located near the town.

In the main square of Sovana, you can admire the Palazzo Pretorio and the Loggia del Capitano, on the left side, stands the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Continuing your visit, you can see the Duomo and the house where Ildebreando was born, a.k.a Pope Gregory the 7th.
